    Alzheimers Cure & Nutritional Hope

I just watched an interview with the author of The End of Alzheimer's, Dale Bredesen. This fills me with so much hope. Not because I have experience cognitive decline, but because this is another of the BIG scary diseases that rips your life from you that has a solution. It is the same feeling I had when I have watched documentaries or read articles about real solutions to the diseases that most people fear. Whether it is cancer or Alzheimer’s, disease is preventable and cura

    Why Do We Warm Up?

Why do we do that? The Warm Up Warming your body it makes it more pliable. In other words it can stretch more. Your muscles are created to stretch about 150%. Just like many other substances, warming muscles up makes them more pliable so they can achieve their maximum lengthening without any damage to the muscle fibers. Stretching is best when the muscles are warm, not cold. Your joints are may be the most important thing to warm up. Especially as you age. Like me. The synovi

    Important Veggies? Spinach!

Nutrition to me is such a very broad topic. I know it can be a daunting task to think about becoming healthy, I promise you it really isn’t! Nutrition is something you progressively develop as time goes on. I encourage you to take it step by step, learn one thing at a time, and you’ll begin to be able to apply each practical nutritional principle into your lifestyle with ease! One vegetable that we all know is good for you, thank you Popeye, is spinach! Spinach can be eaten r

MET's & How to Make The Most of Your Workout

People want to lose weight. Often people think that running is the best way to lose weight because runners are generally skinny. Although running does burn a fair amount of calories, it is not the highest calorie burning exercise. What is it? What is the fountain of skinny exercise? An exercise that uses more MET’s. I am not talking about the New York Mets, but metabolic equivalent. When you boil it down it tells us how much energy you are expending. You probably have seen ME

    Fitness -- As You Age

My last blog was about the importance of health. Read it if you need to in order to understand the Four Quadrants of Time Management and my arguments that you already agree with me about your health. Fitness is a tougher sell to people. I think fitness is a tougher sell because it takes effort. Honestly, your health takes more effort and dedication in more areas of life than fitness does, but caring about your fitness level means you have to subdue your body. You have to...,

    Is Age Just a Number?

My whole life I heard older people, (my definition has changed with every half decade), “wait until you are my age and see if you can do that.” The “that”, was to perform some kind of athletic action. When I was in my 40’s people said, “wait until you are 50 and see how your body acts.” When I was 50 people continued to say, “wait until you are…”. They told me about the body aches and how hard it was to keep the extra weight off. They told me that I wouldn’t be able to do wha

What Does it Mean to Be "Healthy"?

What is happening to the word “health”. I think It is getting hijacked. For a long time I have seen guys and gals who have tremendous looking physiques but eat like crap. Then there is the guy getting his last drag on a cigarette before stepping into the gym. I understand there has always been a fuzzy line with fitness, buffness and being in shape, but the word health? Really? We talk about health like it doesn’t mean what we all were taught it meant. The meaning has been exp

Gym, Community, & Why They Go Hand in Hand

I finished a difficult leg workout this morning and had a thought. “I never pushed myself this hard when I went to a big box gym.” Especially legs! I did more machines and less free weights on legs because…, it was easier. Even though the burn was in the muscles and maximum effort was attained, it still doesn’t compare to our leg workouts here. Was the difference using free weight? I do think that is a factor. While machines have their place, for most of us, we will benefit m

Exercise -- The Most Effective Non-Pill

I have watched a few documentaries about pharmaceuticals. A new one came out this last year on Netflix that talks about Adderall. The thing that we can all agree on, for those who think for themselves, is that we have been trained and taught that if you have something wrong with your brain or your body that there is a pill for that. There are pills for the side effects of pills, but that is another topic. Today’s topic is high blood pressure. Hypertension. There are pills for

    Food and Depression

Many people scoff at eating well. I get asked a lot about my “cheat day”, which I don’t have. For most people, eating well is all about looking good and physical health and fitness. Not so fast Batman! That is so far from the truth. Let me give you two examples. Most of us have heard of dopamine. It is the reward feeling neurotransmitter that is essential in helping us sense the enjoyment of things. A lack of dopamine, according to Psychologistworld.com, has been linked to Pa
